Component-by-Component Material Analysis

Mask Skirt (the face-sealing element)

The mask skirt is the single most material-sensitive component. It presses directly against the diver’s face for extended periods. A poor material choice here causes the #1 customer complaint: leaking.

Silikon: The industry gold standard. Liquid silicone rubber forms a soft, hypoallergenic seal that conforms to facial contours. It stays flexible in cold water, resists UV degradation, and does not leach plasticizers. Premium masks use LSR skirts exclusively.

TPR: An acceptable mid-range alternative. TPR skirts provide reasonable flexibility and are cheaper to produce. Jedoch, TPR stiffens in cold water (below 15°C), which reduces seal quality in cooler conditions. Over 12–18 months of shelf life, TPR can lose plasticizers and become harder.

PVC: The budget option. PVC skirts are rigid compared to silicone and TPR, creating uncomfortable pressure points and poor seals on irregular facial structures. PVC is also the most likely material to cause skin irritation. We recommend PVC skirts only for the lowest price-point products where the end user prioritizes cost over comfort.

Snorkel Body and Bite Valve

Silicone bite valve: Standard across all quality tiers. Silicone is the only material suitable for prolonged oral contact — it is tasteless, odorless, und hypoallergen. Even budget snorkels use silicone bite valves.

Snorkel body: PVC is common for the tube body — it provides adequate rigidity and is inexpensive. Premium snorkels use full-silicone bodies or PE (polyethylene) with silicone overmold for a better feel. TPR is rarely used for snorkel bodies.

Fin Blade

Polypropylene (PP): The standard fin blade material. PP offers a good balance of flexibility, Haltbarkeit, and cost. Most retail snorkeling sets ship with PP blades.

PP + TPR combo: A mid-range upgrade. TPR overlays on a PP blade add flexibility at the tip for a more efficient kick cycle. The dual-material construction costs more but delivers noticeably better performance.

Glass-fiber reinforced: The premium option. Glass-fiber blades deliver maximum thrust per kick and are preferred by experienced snorkelers and freedivers. Higher production cost, but the retail price premium justifies it for performance-oriented product lines.

Fin Foot Pocket

PP: Rigid and cheap. Acceptable for full-foot rental fins where adjustability is not needed. Uncomfortable for open-heel designs.

TPR: The standard for mid-range foot pockets. Flexible enough for comfort, rigid enough for efficient energy transfer. Works well for both full-foot and adjustable-strap designs.

Multi-density silicone: Premium foot pockets that combine soft inner lining with rigid outer structure. Best comfort, best performance, highest cost.

Mask Lens

Temperiertes Glas: The industry standard for quality sets. Tempered glass resists scratching, provides optical clarity, and meets safety standards (ANSI Z87.1, EN 168). It is the only lens material we recommend for mid-range and above.

Polycarbonat (PC): Lighter than glass but scratches more easily. Acceptable for entry-level or children’s sets where impact resistance is prioritized over optical clarity. PC lenses must include a hard coat to be viable.

Silicone Co-injection Advantages

Traditional mask manufacturing bonds the silicone skirt to the plastic frame using adhesive. This glued joint is the weakest point: it can degrade over time, cause leaks, and delaminate under temperature stress.

Silicone co-injection eliminates the adhesive entirely. In this process, liquid silicone rubber is injected directly into the mold containing the polycarbonate frame. The silicone fuses to the frame at a molecular level during the curing cycle — creating a bond that is stronger than either material alone.

  • Stretch test: Silicone stretches 500%+ and returns to original shape. TPR stretches 200–400%. PVC stretches minimally before cracking.
